Does Ozempic Cause Muscle Loss?

Man over 45 training to keep muscle while on Ozempic

Yes, Ozempic can cause muscle loss. It drives fast weight loss, and fast weight loss strips muscle along with fat unless you act. Eating enough protein and training against resistance two to four times a week keeps most of your muscle while the fat comes off.

The muscle loss is not really about the drug itself. It is about how quickly you lose weight and how little you eat while doing it. When food drops sharply, your body breaks down muscle to cover its needs. Studies show muscle can make up a quarter to as much as 40 percent of total weight lost on these medications.

The good news is you control the outcome. Protein gives your body the material to hold muscle. Resistance training gives it the reason to keep it. Do both and you protect nearly all of your muscle. Do neither and you lose a large share of it.

Men over 45 need to watch this most closely, because they are already losing muscle to age, and the drug adds to that loss.
